The Power of Stillness

The Power of Stillness

When Being Still is Challenging & Powerful at the Same Time

I don’t sit still easily.

As a yoga teacher this might seem counterintuitive, but I love a moving meditation and a vinyasa (flow) more than anything. It helps me find my center.

Sometimes though, I just have to sit still.

The last few weeks have felt heavy and I’ve struggled with my own mental health as a result. Movement often helps, but recently it just hasn’t been getting the job done. So, the other night, I just laid on my yoga mat. I thought about how tired I was and how nice it was to just lie there. I started off breathing with some intention and then just found a natural rhythm. Occasionally, I looked out the window at the settling dusk. Without really forcing it, I remained very present for these 5-10 minutes.

When I sat up, my whole outlook was different. Those minutes of stillness did not solve the world’s problems. But, they allowed me some clarity, some ability to reorder my thoughts and my priorities. And they allowed me to cope. Something I realized I had not been doing very well. I was shoving down my emotions, pushing aside my feelings and just surviving.

The stillness found me before the rage or desperation could. I consider that a win.

I encourage you to find some stillness and see what it brings to you.

Take care.
